      Monarch/Wanderer from Caterpillar to Butterfly

Where I come from, the Monarch is known for its long migrations, but in Australia, it doesn’t migrate much at all.

This bright orange butterfly is an immigrant, like me. The lesson she brings is that life is transient, always changing, always transforming, and to cherish whatever form I find myself in.

Milkweed is also about transformation, as it is there for the entire life cycle of the butterfly. It is used medicinally to treat warts, gall and kidney stones – to soften that which is hard, so that we can flow again.

        Multicolored Butterflies

Multicoloured butterflies, they are the magick of transformation – transformation of your whole body (all colours), and transformation of your soul.

Finding a new perspective, taking flight, finally free. Completing one life cycle to start anew another.

The cocoon/butterfly experience is also transformative. We forget that butterfly starts out as a humble caterpillar. The life cycle often involves one plant – the caterpillar eats the leaves, weaves a cocoon on the stem, and then the butterfly pollinates the plant upon release.

The blue/silver/gold of the butterfly talks about communication (throat chakra), the silver thread connects the body to the soul (astral travel), and also connects to the moon and the gold speaks of the sun. This speaks of the need to communicate solar (rational) ideas as well as lunar (intuitive) ones.

            White Butterfly

A White butterfly – a white creature is the Essence of Spirit of that creature. A White Butterfly speaks of the Pure Spirit of ALL butterflies. This is a very high transformational guide.

Butterfly comes from humble caterpillar, who makes a cocoon and waits within for the amazing rebirth into the butterfly. Transformation is the key to the butterfly. The keys here for application are:
            Humility (caterpillar)
            Patience (waiting in the cocoon)
Solitude (your major growth happens in isolation – cocoon), and
            Emergence.

This final phase is where you spread joy and fertility (pollination) for all God’s creatures.

I was learning about the enzymes that dissolve the caterpillar in the cocoon.

The caterpillar completely dissolves so that the butterfly can form, while it is in the cocoon.

In Joseph Epes’ Brown excellent treatise on Lakota Sioux animal medicine, he writes of the cocoon and butterfly as whirlwind energy.

I am not Lakota, and so it is difficult to convey a translation of the culture, but my understanding is that the cocoon is potential whirlwind power, and the winged ones (especially dragonfly, but butterfly also) have power with the whirlwind.

The whirlwind is the chaos, the spinning winds that confuse and confound. The cocoon harnesses the potential of the whirlwind, and the butterfly can harness the whirlwind. One of the powers of the whirlwind is the power to confuse and confound the enemy.

I’m reminded of the chaos theory saying which speaks of the beating of a butterfly’s wings causing a distant monsoon.

Other animals which have affinity with the whirlwind are bison (because he kicks up the dust), elk (who bugles), and bear (?), as well as dragonfly, moth and spider.
