      Owl in Flight

Owl is a dark side animal. The owl speaks of the ability to see in the dark.
The owl’s vision in the dark also includes the ability to see 360 degrees – to take in more perspectives than any other animal, and speaks of knowledge that is hidden from others.

Sometimes owl is a deceiver. Owl can see into the darkness, and some tribes are very uncomfortable with owl medicine, because it is difficult for daylight animals to understand. Some tribes (and peoples) were superstitious about the owls ability to hunt at night, see in the dark, and rotate its head 360 degrees – it would know all your secrets, and was considered a power to be treated with great respect. (and sometimes – not here – they would send owl medicine people to live on their own, because you would be too burdened with secrets, and the people would resent you)

Owl is a medicine of wisdom, of seeing in the dark, of intuition, of being able to turn your head to see many different views. It speaks of connected heart and engaged mind. It moves with perfect silence in flight, a deadly predator in the dark of night

As mentioned before, owl can see in the dark, can fly silently, and some shamans interpret this as “deception.” I have owl medicine, and only rarely have found this to be true. Instead, it is about the silent movement of the journey, the pain of knowing more than you can speak about. And in aboriginal lore, the owl holds the Woman’s soul, and that it may be a female relative guiding you on your path.

        Barn Owl

Barn Owls are amazing animal spirit guides. They bring a host of gifts to those with whom they choose to work. Ted Andrews writes at length about attributes of the Barn Owl in Animal Speak. He characterizes Barn Owl as a teacher of many mysteries, including stealth, clairvoyance, clairaudience, spirit contact, and mediumship. Andrews adds that Barn Owl can also help those with whom he works to establish a strong link between the heart and the mind.

RavenDreamer also speaks at length about Barn Owl’s attributes, stating that those who have the Barn Owl as a guide are likely to have a polarizing effect on people, stimulating either interpersonal attraction or discord. RavenDreamer adds that Barn Owl people may have very different ways of doing things.

Ravenari augments the conversation by commenting that Barn Owl folks tend to hear the truth across the worlds and also tell the truth, but like RavenDreamer, Ravenari asserts that people with Barn Owl as a guide can sometimes evoke social discord, either through their actions or simply how they are perceived by others.

Many owls speak of a new spiritual community, but choosing one owl to follow, speaks of the need for discernment, wisdom, of choosing your path on the journey.

            From Deb Hill (with permission):

Owl is wisdom and brings clarity and discernment. Owl is symbol of being able to navigate any darkness in your life. It can give you strength to open your eyes and look into the shadows. It can show you things that might otherwise remain hidden. Owl is also feminine and helps one to embrace your inner goddess.

              Wikipedia - male Snowy Owl

Alexis Cartwright speaks of Owls’s acute awareness of everything around at all times – excellent vision, can see at night, acute hearing, and can swivel its head 270 degrees to perceive in every direction. Owl speaks of clairvoyance, or unseen truths.

Owl is often a symbol of wisdom because it can see what others cannot. In the Tribes, this power is often feared, as secrets are hard to keep around an Owl.

Owl indicates that you may be being confronted with the unknown, the dark, the unseen. You have the Medicine to perceive what you need to know – there may be deceptions or betrayal, or undisclosed suffering. You may be able to perceive the motives behind other people’s choices and words – Owl’s wisdom is to observe silently, and allow your intuition to choose the right course of action without revealing anyone’s secrets.

Owl also gives you the opportunity to self-examine, and clear your own self-deception. Owl encourages to you to study, examine – silently (his wings are completely silent) – and learn from your observations.
